Fall Technology Helpline Hours

The Technology Services Helpline will be available this fall from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. on Friday. We will be closed Saturday and Sunday. During office hours, you may stop by our main floor Olin location for personal assistance, or we encourage you to try one of our convenient remote support options. For all other times, we recommend leaving email or voicemail, and one of our team members will get back to you as soon as possible.

Security Awareness Training

Technology Services has provided (required) Security Awareness Training for several years. Recent, high-profile breaches inside and outside of higher education have led to an increasingly fraught cybersecurity environment. Insurance providers have tried to keep pace by placing more demands on the institutions and businesses they serve. As a result, we will be revamping the College’s Security Awareness Training program. In the past, we aimed for annual training of ~30 minutes. This year, you can expect biannual (once per semester) training of ~30 minutes. This means you will be asked to watch ~60 minutes of security-related videos throughout the year. To better accommodate this revitalized effort, we are working with a new vendor to improve the content and entertainment value of our training video library. An additional part of this program renewal will include phishing simulations. As phishing attempts grow in sophistication, we too, must redouble our efforts to combat these malicious attacks. At random intervals during the upcoming year, you should expect to receive phishing emails from Technology Services. While harmless, they will give us better insight into our overall preparedness, and give you opportunities to identify suspicious messaging. So, as always, we encourage you to stay vigilant, and learn as much as you can from this year’s training series.

New Ticket Tracking System

In the past, technology support requests were routinely entered into a ticket tracking system called Fusion. Fusion allowed us to route your requests to the appropriate personnel, and it gave you a way to transparently check on the status of your requests. The company that makes Fusion was recently acquired by another company, and we took that opportunity to perform an exhaustive search for alternative solutions that could better meet our needs. This fall, we will be transitioning to a new system called TeamDynamix (TDX). It’s a very popular ticketing system in higher education, and we expect it will help us to maintain a high level of customer service. Moving to a completely new product will offer some challenges. You may notice that some things look or behave differently, and it may take Technology Services staff some time to familiarize themselves with the new interface and processes. After August 15, a link to the TeamDynamix dashboard will be available on the Technology Services website (https://gustavus.edu/gts), where you can get a firsthand look at this new system. Support-related emails from Technology Services will also be coming from TeamDynamix–so please expect them to have a different look. We thank you in advance for your patience during this transitionary period, and we look forward to supporting you with the help of TeamDynamix!

Moodle 4.0 Update

Fall courses are available on the new Moodle server. Moodle 4.0 offers several enhancements to the look and feel of the interface. A full list of feature updates–including a video walkthrough–can be found at https://moodle.gustavus.edu.

Courses from Fall 2020 to Spring 2022 are still available on the Moodle archive server located at https://moodle-archive.gac.edu/.

Network Registration Changes

As a reminder, changes to the network last Spring allowed us to eliminate the need for the “GustavusGuest” wireless network. Visitors to campus can connect through the regular “Gustavus” option. Additionally, devices connecting to the “Gustavus” and “GustavusSecure” wireless networks no longer require registration.

Zoom Reminder

As a reminder, the College’s institutional Zoom license expired earlier this summer. This decision was made after a thorough review of community feedback, and recommendations from the Academic Technology Committee (ATC) and Technology Services. As a result, Technology Services will no longer be able to offer any Zoom support, but we will continue to provide Google Meet as an alternative to Zoom. If your teaching/learning/work and other activities depend on a virtual conferencing environment, we encourage you to consider Google Meet.

iProjection Changes

The connection process for iProjection was modified last year. The new method requires an initial manual setup that can be saved for later use. Instructions can be found in relevant classrooms or online at: https://gustavus.edu/gts/IProjection#Using_iProjection.

Loaner Laptop Fleet for Students

The Loaner Laptop program was highly utilized last year. If you know of a student in need of a temporary computing solution, please refer them to the following request form: https://gustavus.edu/techrequest/.

Remote Learning Equipment

A small amount of hardware for augmenting remote/hybrid learning scenarios is available upon request. If you need an iPad, webcam, headset, or Bluetooth speaker, we encourage you to submit your request at https://gustavus.edu/techrequest/. Quantities are limited.
