Technology Services Monthly

Adobe Licensing Update

Adobe has eliminated some flexibility in their licensing options that will result in a prohibitive cost increase. Because of these changes, Technology Services has been forced to develop a plan to reduce the overall number of licenses. After evaluating the new options and studying institutional usage of Adobe products, the full Adobe Creative Cloud Suite will be available in the following locations:

  • Digital Art Lab (Beck 112)
  • Olin Computer Lab (Olin 124)
  • Virtual Lab

Additionally, Digital Art Lab faculty will be provided with licenses to the Adobe Creative Cloud Suite. Anyone else needing access to Adobe products will be strongly encouraged to utilize the Virtual Lab, otherwise, they may purchase a license through Technology Services at an annual cost of $300 per user.

This new schema will have a very noticeable effect on Adobe product access across campus. We will be actively searching for viable alternatives for the most commonly used applications (Adobe Acrobat Pro), and we hope to provide more and better options moving forward.

If you want more details about Adobe’s new licensing structure, or the rationale behind the plan to address the problem, please feel free to contact Tami Aune (tami@gustavus.edu).

Single Sign-On for WebAdvisor and SelfService (MyGustavus)

On July 31, 2019 Technology Services will be activating Single Sign-On for WebAdvisor and Self-Service (MyGustavus). After this date, you will no longer need a separate password for WebAdvisor/Self-Service, instead, you will see the standard Gustavus sign-on page, and you will need to provide your Gustavus username and password (the same credentials you use to sign into email, the Gustavus website, and a number of other systems). This change will offer easier access to these vital services by reducing the number of passwords you must remember, and also improve security through the addition of Single Sign-On and DUO two-factor authentication.

Please contact the Technology Services Helpline at helpline@gustavus.edu or x6111 if you have any questions.

Email Alias/List Cleanup

In preparation for the eventual move to Google Groups, please check the following page (campus sign-in required) to ensure that your email aliases/lists are current. If you have aliases/lists that can be removed, please do so.

Spirion Scans

We highly recommend that you perform monthly Spirion scans in order to detect the presence of sensitive data on your College-owned machine(s). Be sure to thoroughly review your results to ensure that nothing is overlooked. Keeping your computer free of sensitive data limits your exposure in the event that a breach does occur!

iProjection or EasyMP

iProjection is available in the Windows Software Center as an alternative to EasyMP. iProjection should work with most projectors on campus. Download, install, and give it a try. Let us know if it works well for you!

Microsoft Apps Portal

A large number of cloud-based apps–provided by Microsoft and other vendors–can be viewed and used through Microsoft’s MyApps portal. Commonly used campus tools, along with Microsoft’s own robust catalog of cloud-based services, can be accessed by anyone with a Gustavus account. Just sign in with your Gustavus email and password at: https://myapps.microsoft.com.
