You may have heard about the Macintosh Root Vulnerability that garnered headlines on tech blogs across the web.

Here’s how this vulnerability affects Macs on campus.

If you have a Gustavus issued Mac of any kind, you are not affected for two reasons. First, it only affects the latest versions of macOS – High Sierra (version 10.13.x) which was released earlier this fall. Gustavus Technology Services is currently deploying Sierra (version 10.12.6) which does not have the vulnerability. Second, Gustavus Technology Services configures the root account on all Macs to have a strong, secure password that blocks this vulnerability.

If you are a student or employee with a personally owned Mac, you may be affected by this vulnerability. Fortunately, Apple has released an update that fixes the root vulnerability that Apple is already pushing out to users. To make sure you have the update, open the Mac App Store and click on the Updates tab to check for and install any updates that may be present.
