Summer Recap
Welcome back! Some important things happened while everyone was away. Here’s a brief rundown of some changes that could impact your return.
Nobel Hall Progress
The halfway point for the Nobel Hall expansion and renovation will introduce a number of new lab, teaching, and community spaces, including the Laboratory Theater, Teaching Kitchen, and STEAMery (coffee shop). Technology is everywhere, with dozens of new access points, digital signs, projectors, and more than 800 network jacks!
Adobe Licensing Update
Adobe has eliminated some flexibility in their licensing options that will result in a prohibitive cost increase. Because of these changes, Technology Services has been forced to develop a plan to reduce the overall number of licenses. After evaluating the new options and studying institutional usage of Adobe products, the full Adobe Creative Cloud Suite will be available in the following locations:
- Digital Art Lab (Beck 112)
- Olin Computer Lab (Olin 124)
- Virtual Lab
Additionally, Digital Art Lab faculty will be provided with licenses to the Adobe Creative Cloud Suite. Anyone else needing access to Adobe products will be strongly encouraged to utilize the Virtual Lab, otherwise, they may purchase a license through Technology Services at an annual cost of $300 per user.
This new schema will have a very noticeable effect on Adobe product access across campus. We will be actively searching for viable alternatives for the most commonly used applications (Adobe Acrobat Pro), and we hope to provide more and better options moving forward.
If you want more details about Adobe’s new licensing structure, or the rationale behind the plan to address the problem, please feel free to contact Tami Aune (tami@gustavus.edu).
iProjection or EasyMP
iProjection is available on Epson’s website and in the Windows Software Center as an alternative to EasyMP. iProjection should work with most projectors on campus. Download, install, and give it a try. Let us know how it works for you!
Single Sign-On for WebAdvisor and SelfService (MyGustavus)
On July 31, 2019 Technology Services activated Single Sign-On for WebAdvisor and Self-Service (MyGustavus). You will no longer need a separate password for WebAdvisor/Self-Service, instead, you will see the standard Gustavus sign-on page, and you will need to provide your Gustavus username and password (the same credentials you use to sign into email, the Gustavus website, and a number of other systems). This change offers easier access to these vital services by reducing the number of passwords you must remember, and also improves security through the addition of Single Sign-On and DUO two-factor authentication.
Please contact the Technology Services Helpline at helpline@gustavus.edu or x6111 if you have any questions.
Email Alias/List Cleanup
In preparation for the eventual move to Google Groups, please check the following page (campus sign-in required) to ensure that your email aliases/lists are current. If you have aliases/lists that can be removed, please do so.

ATC/Administrative Equipment Allocation Report
The Academic/Administrative Technology allocation process is in progress. We anticipate that approximately 85% of approved hardware requests will be delivered by September 1. More information, along with an updated listing of technology requests and their current statuses, can be found on the Technology Request Process page: https://gustavus.edu/gts/Technology_Request_Process
Helpline Hours for Fall
The Technology Helpline will be available to assist you from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. on Friday. The Helpline will be closed Saturday and Sunday. You can email us anytime at helpline@gustavus.edu.
15-inch MacBook Pro Battery Recall
Apple is recalling a number of 15-inch MacBook Pro machines with potentially faulty batteries that may pose a fire safety risk. Technology Services has identified all College-owned machines that match the specifications, and arrangements have been made with the affected employees to replace the battery or upgrade to a new laptop. Students (and staff with personal machines) who own 15-inch MacBook Pros purchased between 2015 and 2017, are strongly encouraged to visit the following page to determine whether or not their laptop is eligible for the recall:

Wireless Issue in Nobel Hall
Some laptops that use Intel Wireless AC-7265 or AC-8265 wireless network cards may be unable to connect with the network in Nobel Hall. Laptops issued by Gustavus, including the Lenovo T440 and T450 models, may be affected by this issue. We encourage you to stop by GTS with your laptop if you experience any difficulty connecting to the Nobel Hall wireless network. We can assist with the download and installation of new drivers that should resolve the problem.
GreyCastle Security Update
Technology Services is contracting with GreyCastle Security to perform a vulnerability assessment that will highlight opportunities for improvement and risks in the organization and its technology infrastructure. This assessment will include an internal vulnerability component that will occur on campus, as well as an external penetration test that will involve scanning the College’s networks from outside. A risk assessment will also be conducted to identify process and policy issues that should be addressed. This step may also include interviews with key members of the campus community.
