Spear Phishing Attempts

Spear Phishing is the fraudulent practice of sending emails that appear to be from a known or trusted sender. The goal of spear phishing is often to elicit confidential information, or to have the recipient perform some action (e.g., clicking on a link or downloading an attachment).

Duo Two Factor Tips

The Duo Mobile App can be used entirely offline (without wifi or cellular data). If you are traveling and don’t have an internet connection on your phone, just open the Duo Mobile App and tap “Gustavus Adolphus College.”  A six digit number should appear that you can use as a passcode when you sign in on another device.

Also, it is important that you pay attention to the location of the Duo Push notifications.  The IP address and a city where the sign in took place will be displayed. Your city may not be exact, but if you see something that is significantly different than where you actually are, deny the attempt and call GTS.  Someone else may have your password!

Internet Upgrade

Due to the ever increasing demand for internet bandwidth it is once again time for GTS to upgrade our internet connection before spring semester kicks off.  For the past few years the campus has had 2Gbit/s of bandwidth to the internet and 1Gbit/s to Internet2.  While this was an impressive capacity a few years ago, we recently noticed that we were sporadically hitting our limit.

As of the first week in February, 2019 the campus now has 5Gbit/s of bandwidth to the internet and 2Gbit/s to Internet2 which gives us the potential to use up to 7Gbit/s at any one time. This more than doubles our previous connection! Anyone who is curious about our internet usage and wondering how much bandwidth we are consuming at any point can check out our network graphs over at https://stats2.gac.edu.

Security Awareness Training

Technology Services will soon be providing security awareness training to all campus employees. The training will use videos to showcase common technology threats and how to avoid them. Employees can expect to receive an email with instructions for accessing and completing the training later this spring.

GusMail Updates

GusMail has now replaced the legacy email system for all campus accounts. The entire GTS team thanks you for your questions, feedback, and patience during this transition.

GusMail Thank You Event

You’ve migrated to GusMail, but you still have questions. Join us in Olin Hall between 2-4 p.m. on February 22 for snacks and conversation. GTS staff will be on hand to answer your questions and help you make the most of GusMail!

Data Loss Prevention in GusMail

On March 4, Data Loss Prevention (DLP) features will be activated for all GusMail users. Google’s Data Loss Prevention system will warn you when you receive an email that may contain sensitive information such as credit card and social security numbers. The Data Loss Prevention system will also prevent GusMail users from sending any message that may contain similarly sensitive information. If your message is deemed to contain such content, you will receive a warning prompt. You can remove or alter the non-compliant content, or try sending your message using SecureShare.

IMAP Deactivation

Also on March 4, IMAP will no longer be an option for connecting to your GusMail. If you are currently receiving GusMail messages through a third-party application like Thunderbird, it will cease to function on this date. Only the browser-based client and official Gmail apps will be supported. Please make the necessary changes to your devices prior to March 4 to ensure uninterrupted email service.

Thanks for this newsletter. Interesting info. I hope a future newsletter article addresses how to read the Crash Plan report we get. I sign in daily, but I’m not sure what the two different user accounts in the daily email report refer to, and whether I’m really backed up.
