Get your Gravatars! Posted on February 19th, 2009 by

We recently enabled some new features involving comments on blogs at Gustavus. One of the coolest features, and the one that could use a little help from you readers, is the addition of Gravatars.

What are Gravatars?

From the Gravatar website:

A gravatar, or globally recognized avatar, is quite simply an image that follows you from site to site appearing beside your name when you do things.

Gravatars are being used on many websites and have been growing in popularity over the past few years.

Why do I care?

We hope that Gravatars on comments will help add a little personality and parsability to the comments section of each blog post. Wouldn’t the web be a better place if it felt more like a real person was behind each comment? Plus, you have the added benefit of your Gravatar working on many websites. How’s that for do-it-onceness?

What do I have to do?

It is actually very easy to set up your Gravatar. To get started, simply sign up at the Gravatar website with the e-mail address you use when commenting. Once you have your new image uploaded, it may take a few minutes to start showing up next to your comments, so take some deep breaths or go make yourself a sandwich while things update.

Question posed by me (and Dan): Should I use @gustavus.edu or @gac.edu

Answer posited by me: whichever I’m going to put in the form when I post.

Good question posed and answer posited. Since you can associate multiple e-mail addresses with your Gravatar account, I would recommend setting it up for both @gustavus.edu and @gac.edu so your bases are covered.

The Gravatar that appears with your comment will have to match the e-mail address that you use when making that comment.

Currently, I have seven different e-mail addresses in my Gravatar account.
