Call your room phone for free Posted on January 23rd, 2007 by

Gustavus has now joined the likes of MIT, Harvard, Yale, and many others in having campus phones reachable simply by dialing a users email address.

The inspiration for this comes from the Internet2 SIP.edu working group. The end result is that you can now tell your family and friends that they can call your room phone number absolutely free over the internet by using any of a number of voice over IP (VoIP) softphones. Or, if they happen to have a real VoIP phone that supports SIP URI dialing, they can call you with that phone too.

One easy to use VoIP softphone that supports SIP URI dialing is Gizmo from the gizmoproject.com website.

If you want to give it a try, start by downloading Gizmo and installing it. Once you start it you need to create an account and sign in. After you are up and running you can enter any Gustavus email address at the top and click on the green phone icon to place your call. If you just want to test it out, try calling echotest@gac.edu. That will connect you to our VoIP echotest where you can talk and hear your voice repeated back to you. For best results you should use a headset with a built in microphone.
