Since it does not look like spam is going away any time soon and the amount of spam being sent to Gustavus addresses is increasing every day, we needed to add more spam checking servers. Checking as much email as we get for spam is a very big task. As a result we now have a total of 5 servers sharing the load. 2 of them are now dedicated to that task. This should result in email being delivered faster during peek times.
For the curious, Gustavus receives about 55,000 email messages a day that make it past our first line of defenses. Of that 55,000 about 1,000 are viruses or phishing attempts. About 20% of the email that we run through SpamAssassin is marked as spam.
