Unexpected Downtime Posted on August 31st, 2006 by

At about 2:45pm Thursday August 31, our primary mailserver failed causing all access to Gustavus email to stop. Email service was restored at about 3:05pm. As a result, some of you using non webmail based email clients may notice some messages are now marked as unread that were read just before the server failed. To minimize the chances of this happening in the future, I suggest changing your email settings such that your client compacts your mailbox frequently or use webmail.

For example in Thunderbird I have mine set to “Compact folders when it will save over 10 KB”. This way I only had a couple of read messages show up again in my inbox as read.
