More unexpected downtime Posted on May 10th, 2006 by

At about 2:00pm something happened on the network in the Art building such that by 4:00pm it caused major network issues and our core router was unable to handle the load. As a result all network traffic was unusable. At this time we have it narrowed down to 3 possible ports in the Art building.

UPDATE:  It turns out that someone in a classroom in the Art building caused a network loop by plugging in 2 ethernet cables from our wall jack into the same switch.  I guess 2 is better than one right? :)  Well, the network loop was not detected because the switch over there did not have STP enabled (it is now) and therefore caused a traffic overload.
