Secondary Mailserver Changes Posted on March 23rd, 2005 by

I just wanted to let everyone know that we are putting a new email server into place as a secondary to solen. This new email server has been configured to better combat spam by enforcing mailservers to adhere to the email standards more strictly. It will also pass all the email through an email scanner called MailScanner ( http://mailscanner.info/ ) which in turn uses two virus scanners (ClamAV and f-prot). What this means is that in some cases email will get delivered through the new secondary mail server. For instance when solen is overloaded and not accepting new email, regular mailservers will attempt to use the secondary. Also many spammers will use the secondary in hopes that it will allow email that the primary would have rejected.

Another benefit of the new system is that in addition to better virus checking, it does some phishing detection. So instead of getting an email that is supposedly from your bank asking you to do something with your account, you will get an email warning you that that email was probably a phishing attempt.

The end result is that you may get some new notifications about phishing, viruses, and other things that the new mailserver is blocking and that hopefully you won’t be surprised when you get them.

If you have any questions, comments, concerns, please let us know.
