Over break we made four major changes to our connection to the Internet. For the most part, they won’t impact how you use the Internet on a day to day basis, but they should improve our systems behind the scenes.
We upgraded to a newer router which should be able to take better advantage of our 1Gbps Internet connection.
We started using our own IPv6 IP address range. Previously we had been using a subset of Internet 2’s IP addresses. Since IPv6 seems to be here to stay, we acquired our own range.
We now have redundant Internet providers. If our primary Internet provider (Hurricane Electric) has problems with its connection in Minneapolis, we will now automatically switch over to using Level3.
Each person now has a 5GB daily limit when uploading to the Internet at top speeds. After he or she has uploaded 5GB of data in a 24 hour period, upload speeds will be restricted to 1Mbps — similar to most home DSL or cable modems. If you believe you need to upload more data at top speeds, please e-mail noc@gustavus.edu and we can find a solution.
If you have any questions about these upgrades, please feel free to e-mail noc@gustavus.edu or stop by Olin 122.
